Paul Robinson

Speaker

Paul Robinson

Paul started out in cybersecurity 14 years ago, by accident. In 2009 he joined a telecommunications firm, which was an industry he was familiar with. Within two weeks of being there, the executive team made the decision to switch complete focus to cybersecurity. During this time, the organization became the first systems integrator in New York for solutions such as: Palo Alto Network, Q-Radar, Cyber-Ark and Proofpoint. It was an amazing experience to watch these companies grow and to consult clients on the value of modernizing their technology stack.

In 2016, Paul began the second part of his career working for a firm that provided GRC and Risk Management Services. It was here where Paul was able to learn the business and holistic side of cybersecurity. Helping organizations: build their cybersecurity programs, work through difficult compliances, and assist in crisis mode during cyber incidents gave him a sense of purpose in his work. Paul didn’t grow up in technology or business however in Brooklyn, NY where he saw his mom and dad serve the underserved community through their church. The sense of purpose to help people never left him and it was at this time he was able to marry his internal passions with newly found professional passion.

During the pandemic, Paul started to become aware of some deficiencies in the industry that disturbed him. He noticed that a lot of businesses were making their cybersecurity decisions based on industry fads and unmerited FUD. This was troubling to see as with this strategy, organizations were not considering their true business needs and how cybersecurity and risk could help solve them.

In April of 2023, Paul started his own independent cybersecurity advisory firm, Tempus Network. Tempus in Latin means “Time”. While we as an industry focus on dollars and cents, the currency of time is wasted a lot in our industry and oh by the way you can’t recoup that loss. The firm is designed to help organizations with a safe place to talk about their cybersecurity initiatives, without worrying about being pitched for a product. Without going into a whole commercial, it has allowed me to go back to my roots as a little boy and do what I saw my parents do, authentically help people through hard situations Note: I will never do it as great as they did .

One of the causes that Paul has come across this past year is the subject of digital accessibility in cybersecurity. It was a sobering thought to understand how non accessible we are with tools, trainings and hiring professionals. It is a huge vulnerability in our industry, and if properly addressed, a huge opportunity to mitigate this vulnerability and make our community stronger. There are many people more passionate than I am that are actively trying to solve this massive problem. However, I feel it is my responsibility as a human and security professional to use my platform to at least bring awareness to this subject. We have become increasingly inclusive over the years and this is one group that needs visibility, as well.
